The Office of the Federal Defender for the District of Connecticut has an opening for an Assistant Federal Defender. The Federal Defender operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, U.S.C. 3006A, to provide defense services to indigent persons in federal criminal cases. The position is at will and not covered by the Civil Service Act.
Applicant must have the ability to immediately undertake the defense of major criminal cases in the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut, as well as in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Applicant must be a law school graduate and an active member in good standing of the bar in any state. Applicant should have substantial criminal trial experience, knowledge of federal criminal trial practice and federal sentencing guidelines, must possess excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills, experience in computer-assisted legal research, the ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues, and a reputation for integrity and commitment to the representation of those unable to afford counsel. An Assistant Federal Defender may not engage in the private practice of law.
The Federal Defender litigates cases in three seats of court (Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport).
This is a full-time position with federal salary and benefits based on qualification and experience. Salary is on a scale equivalent to that of Assistant United States Attorneys. This position is subject to mandatory electronic transfer (direct deposit) participation for payment of net pay.
