James is an Assistant Federal Defender in the New Haven Office. In additional to his AFD duties, he assists participants in the New Haven Support Court program. James graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he represented indigent defendants as a student attorney at Harvard's Criminal Justice Institute and as an intern at the Federal Defender Office in Boston and the Public Defender’s Major Crimes Unit in New Haven. He also served as an editor of Unbound: Harvard Journal of the Legal Left. After law school, James clerked for the Honorable Lubbie Harper, Jr., Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court and for the Honorable Leonard I. Garth, United States Court of Appeals Judge for the Third Circuit. Before joining the Federal Defender Office, James was a fellow in a boutique civil rights firm, where his practice included representing plaintiffs in wrongful incarceration and police misconduct cases. James graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College.
