Andrew Paul Giering is an Assistant Federal Defender in the Office of the Federal Defender for the District of Connecticut, based in New Haven. He joined the Office as a Research and Writing Attorney in 2018. From 2012 until 2018, he practiced securities litigation, complex commercial litigation, and white-collar criminal defense at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York and Wiggin and Dana in New Haven. While in private practice, Andrew volunteered hundreds of hours to pro bono clients, including through the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, the Urban Justice League, and Catholic Charities.

Andrew clerked for the Honorable Alvin W. Thompson, then-Chief Judge for the District of Connecticut. He earned his J.D. at Yale Law School in 2011, and received a B.A. in history, magna cum laude, from Columbia University in 2008. While a law student, Andrew interned at the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the District of Connecticut and the Southern District of New York.

Andrew is an inaugural member of the Correction Advisory Committee, an oversight panel for the Connecticut Department of Correction established by the Connecticut General Assembly in 2022. He also currently serves as President of the Board of Directors of the New Haven Free Public Library, and on the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut, the Connecticut Democracy Center, and the Connecticut Italian American Bar Association. Since 2020, Andrew has volunteered as Secretary of the Knights of St. Patrick, the oldest continuously run Irish-American society in Connecticut. He is a third-generation New Haven resident and dedicated public and community servant.
