Maria has been the Non-Capital Mitigation Specialist since January, 2017. Her position is precisely the role for her because of her compassion and empathy for the clients and her strong belief for social justice. She conducts client social histories, collateral interviews and maintains supportive relationships with clients and family members. She facilitates client admissions to mental health and/or substance abuse residential facilities, and assists in the development of treatment plans and helps pre-trial and post-conviction clients to find housing, vocational training and educational programs. In June 2017, she was awarded The Melissa Kupferberg Annual Training Scholarship through the National Alliance of Sentencing Advocates and Mitigation Specialists and attended the NLADA Leadership Conference. Prior to January 2017, Maria was a paralegal with the FDO for seven years. Maria earned a BS with a concentration in Behavioral Sciences from Charter Oak State College, and a Criminal Law Paralegal Specialist Certificate from Duke University. Along with First Assistant Defender Kelly Barrett she serves as a representative for the FDO in Support Court in Bridgeport. She is fluent in Spanish.
